Carolyn Mather is a former middle school teacher, nurse, college professor, manager/director with two major Southeastern Hospitals, Health Care Manager with a major US Corporation, Runner of the year for Tampa Bay Florida, Masters Runner of the year for the BAA in Boston, President of West Florida Y Runners, Race Director for several races in the Tampa Bay Area, runner of the year in Binghamton NY, Board member of the Atlanta Track Club, Coordinator of the Atlanta Track Club Women's Competitive Team, Masters Winner of the Los Angeles Marathon, the New Jersey Waterfront Marathon, the San Diego Marathon, and Open Winner (Twice) of the Tampa Bay Marathon. She is also the overall winner (not just the women) of the only "Ultra" distance race she ever attempted when she clocked the 3rd fastest women's time in the world (7:03:12) in 1986 to win the "Passing for Sane" 50 miler in Tampa Bay.

Carolyn has completed over 50 Marathons in times ranging from 2:51:40 To 3:20:00 including the Paris Marathon and the Venice (Italy) marathon. At the age of 52 she is currently recognized as one of the most competitive grand masters in the country at distances from 5 Km to the marathon.

Carolyn also has served the running community in the US in several other volunteer capacities, helping John Hancock stage the elite field for the Boston Marathon for 9 years, staging the elite fluids for the 1996 US women's marathon Olympic trials, assisting with the 1995 Men's and Women's National Marathon Championships, the 1996 US Men's Marathon Olympic trials, and with the 1996 Olympics and staging the elite fluids for the 2000 US women's marathon Olympic trials.

In addition to her teaching credentials and her RN certificate she has her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Florida State University. She is also the mother of grown twin daughters and the grandmother of 6. Carolyn has been running for 23 years starting at the relatively "old" age of 29. She typically runs between 40 and 50 races a year and trains between 90 and 120 miles per week. In addition to her running mileage, weekly training includes significant stretching, weekly massage, and weight training.

Carolyn is married to former GE Executive Steve Mather and they live "on 17 acres of Sanity surrounded by Reality" in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia where Carolyn trains, runs, coordinates the RJ Women's Running Team, writes the monthly column on Women's Running for Running Journal, and does "the toughest job she ever had" taking care of Steve. They also travel extensively. Carolyn and Steve count many of the giants of the running community around the US and the world as close friends and countless national and internationally competitive athletes. Working as volunteers with the elite athletes with several major races they have developed many lasting friendships.
